Martyrdom is dumb

What is the point of martyrdom?

Why settle for just a crumb,
When you own the entire queendom?
You deserve the full income
Not simply a sparse sum
Why are we to succumb
to having less because we are a mum?
We provide for those around us,
a place to grow, flourish, become,
ensuring for all a great outcome,
while we treat ourselves like ocean scum,
allow ourselves to grow weary, old, and numb,
living in our self-created slum,
sacrifice being the rule of thumb.
Swallowed up by the everyday humdrum,
we allow ourselves barely a crumb.
Feeling lofty for the myriad sum
of all that we have refrained from.
The simple sounds of the guitar strum.
The taste of the ripe beach plum.
A drink made from Jamaican Bay rum.
We get to 50 and ask, “How come?”
Why do we treat ourselves like pond scum?
To our SOUL’s journey we have become numb.
We arrive at the crossroads overcome
with grief, rage, resentment and ho-hum.
We have been sick, exhausted, and overcome
by a plethora of ailments at their fastigium.
It is time for us to connect to the direct sum
of all that we are, and to become.
The queen of our queendom.
We must connect with our beauty, strength, and grace
Stop pondering, “Why? When? And how come?”
It is now that we, as women, must play our own drum,
not cower, and our power shrink from.
It is now ourselves to be “welcome.”
Thank you to everything we flow from.
Placing ourselves in the centre is the new rule of thumb.
We must celebrate our lives like a magnificent magnum.
Listening to our wisdom from our collective cerebrum
and the intuitive whispers from our sacred sacrum.
May we we flourish for years to come
like the beautiful Caribbean flower, the Guicum.
